Itinerary

1st day - Welcome to Brussels

Arrive Brussels Airport. Train transfer to downtown Bruessel. Overnight.

2nd day - Brussels and the Battle of Waterloo

Leave your hotel in Brussels for an 8-hour tour and spend the morning in Brussels making the first stop at Grand Place, Brussels' beautiful medieval main square. You will walk past Baroque and Gothic buildings as you learn about their history, and go to the Manneken Pis statue to find out why this unusual monument of a urinating boy was erected here in the mid-17th century.

Continue to the Laeken district, where the main residence of the Belgian royal family is located. You will pass the Cathedral of St. Michael, the Royal Palace, the Chinese Pavilion and the Japanese Tower. Look forward to a photo opportunity at the Atomium, the stunning sculpture built for the 1957 Brussels World's Fair. Then on to the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Admire the Art Deco style interior and visit the dome for a bird's eye view of the city. See the beautiful Place Royale and the Place du Grand Sablon, with its impressive Gothic church and courthouses.

Just before lunch (at your own expense), admire the Arc de Triomphe and the Jubilee Park created in 1880 for the 50th anniversary of Royal Belgium.

A 40-minute drive south will take you to the town of Waterloo. It was here in 1815 that one of the most important battles in European history took place - the Battle of Waterloo.
Their guide explains the history of the battle, during which the French army lost to the British and Prussian troops of the Duke of Wellington, which ended with 12,000 dead and 35,000 injured. A key moment in the history of these countries, the Battle of Waterloo, led to the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, ending the era of French hegemony in Europe.
See where the complex battle plans were forged in the Duke's former headquarters and La Belle Alliance, an inn that Napoleon used as his headquarters. Enjoy a fantastic view over the battlefields of Lion Hill, an artificial hill built as a memorial in honor of Wilhelm II of the Netherlands.

Then, take a tour of the battlefield itself, stopping at a few key locations to get more in depth with your tour guide. You'll see the places where some of the bloodiest episodes took place, and you'll visit La Haye Sainte, a series of farm buildings that hid the duke's men. Commemorate the fallen soldier on a visit to the Gordon Monument and the Prussian Memorial in the now peaceful village of Plancenoit, where the Prussian Allies attacked Napoleon's forces and won an important victory in the battle.
After this fascinating overview of the Battle of Waterloo you drive back to the center of Brussels. Highlights of Brussels, glimpse of one of the most important battles in European history at the scene of the legendary Battle of Waterloo.
