Dinner and Overnight at hotel.
Avignon on the Rhone. From 1309 to 1377 the seat of the Catholic Popes and until 1791 under papal rule, then Avignon fell to France.
The testimony of this story is the Palais des Papes, the "Palais des Papes". The transfer of the papal seat to Avignon should have a lasting effect on the cityscape. The mighty Papal Palace was built around the city and a defensive wall. There were also Gothic churches, monasteries and towers and impressive Kardinalslivrées. The new Papsthof became one of the most splendid courtyards of the Middle Ages.
The picturesque center of Avignon, situated on the banks of the Rhône, is the largest preserved old town in France and, with its size, is a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After breakfast, your guide awaits you for a city tour. The "Palais des Papes" takes you back to the middle of the last millennium. You will learn more about the epoch of only 70 years as seat of the Pope, about the power struggles with Rome and the influence of the Pope's seat on the development of the city and the region.
"Sur le pont d'Avignon ..." - who does not know him, this much sung Canon!
Well, today you enter this famous building - maybe singing? Very impressive and picturesque. Only to the other shore can not get over this bridge anymore - but that's another story.
The alleys of the old town, which wind their way from the Rhone towards the Papal Palace, invite you to linger with their cozy cafes and small restaurants. Be inspired by the variety of freshly prepared food and drink and have your lunch.
Glad to sit here ...!
Early afternoon bus ride to the Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct in the south of France.
Of the most important aqueducts of the Gallo-Roman era, the Pont du Gard is the most famous relic. The ancient masterpiece supplied the city of Nîmes daily with fresh water with its almost 50 kilometers long water pipe.
The Pont du Gard was built in the 1st century. It took fifteen years for the entire aqueduct, five of them for the bridge over the Gard, now called Gardon. It is a landmark of the region and one of the best preserved ancient buildings ever. At a height of 49 meters on three floors, the view is breathtaking and rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You will visit the aqueduct on a hike along the Gardon River.
Dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast, drive to Arles and 2-hour city tour of Arles.
Arles - on the banks of the Rhone, knows how to skilfully combine past and present. The former seat of government of Friedrich Barbarossa counts with Marseille to the oldest cities in France.
The city is famous as a source of inspiration for Van Gogh's paintings, which in turn influenced the contemporary art presented at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh. Arles was once the provincial capital of the Roman Empire and is also known for its many remains, including the Arles Amphitheater, which today hosts theatrical performances, concerts and bullfights.
Continue to the Camargue in the south of Provence, famous for its flamingos, white Camargue horses and black bulls.
Between the arms of the Rhône and the Petit Rhône lies the sparsely populated Camargue, the Grande Camargue. Part of the Petite Camargue, which extends west of the Petit Rhône and a coastal strip, is also part of the Camargue Regional Natural Park. The deeper you enter the Camargue, the farther the plain becomes.
In a unique way you can see here how nature can adapt. The Rhône has created this landscape in countless centuries through floods and deposits. The omnipresent high salinity makes only special plants thrive, such as the tamarisk, which remain unforgettable with their color splendor unforgettable.
Your hike will take you through the park "Pont de Gau", the largest refuge for more than 350 different species of birds.
"Saintes Marie de la Mer, the southernmost town of the Camargue, is revered Saint Sara, patron saint of the Roma.
From a Manade, a bull-breeding farm, you will ride through the pristine nature of the Camargue in traditional carriage, the "Chariot Tracté" - past wild black bulls and proud Gardians on their horses. Your dinner will be on the Manade. Camargue specialties are on the menu.
Return to your hotel and overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel and then departure to Nîmes.
Roman, classical and at the same time contemporary: this is how Nîmes, one of the major cities in the Languedoc-Mediterranean region, is exhibited - for culture enthusiasts and nature lovers. Nîmes was built in the 6th century BC. Founded and 120 v. Chr. Taken by the Romans. The Roman rulers left a rich legacy to the city, which has survived to this day and earned it the title "Antiquity in the Present". The Arena, a two-storey amphitheater and the Maison Carré are just two of many attractions that give the visitor an impression of this bygone era. Your guide will guide you through the city for two hours.
Continue to Aix-en-Provence and check in at your hotel.
Aix-en-Provence - charming host!
The ancient capital of Provence is located in the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southern France, 30 km north of Marseille. It is a city of art and culture, in which the spirit seems to flow more freely and carefree than anywhere else. Many old palaces, art treasures in museums and churches bear witness to a glorious past.
A visit to Aix is inconceivable without a stroll on the Cours Mirabeau. This historic boulevard, lined with old plane trees, cafés and elegant town villas, is one of the city's most popular and liveliest spots. The song of the cicadas mingles with the splashing of the wells in the sunlight of Provence. At the end of this boulevard, we come across the huge "Rotonde Fountain". Built in 1860, it is crowned by three statues symbolizing the Judiciary (direction Cours Mirabeau), agriculture (looking towards Marseille) and the Fine Arts (Avignon in view). Here you meet, as it were, at the navel of the city of Cézanne and almond confectionery.
