The white gold of the Hanseatic League

The story is exciting like a crime thriller. Adventure, betrayal, war & love. The Hanseatic League could also provide the script for a great historical novel.

Countless fates and tragedies are linked to the rise and fall of the brotherhood. But also immeasurable wealth and .... Power!

As early as 1356, the Hanseatic League under the leadership of Lübeck, founded in 1159, took the step from a loose union as a trading Hanseatic League to an influential city Hanseatic League.

But who or what was the Hanseatic League? It was not a union of cities in the true sense of the word. And its influence was not primarily directed at political goals, even if these often went hand in hand. Rather, it was an association of merchants and served trade in ever more distant regions of the world. And finally also to protect its trade routes and branches. For with the successful trade, the wealth of the merchants and Hanseatic cities also grew and naturally aroused envy and desire.

Protection from brutal attacks and dark machinations was provided by armed troops, who from then on accompanied the trading caravans on their trade routes. The Hanseatic cities defended themselves with mighty walls and gates. The Holstentor in Lübeck, for example, is such a massive bulwark, protecting the population within the city walls.

At its heyday in the 14th and 15th century, the Hanseatic League comprised about 200 towns. But the center of power remained the large port cities on the North Sea, as well as on the Baltic Sea.

With the emerging 15th and 16th century, the Hanseatic League lost more and more importance. The supremacy of the Hanseatic League in the North and Baltic Sea region was broken by the advance of English and Dutch merchants.

And thus began the slow decline of the Hanseatic League as an economic power, although formally it still existed until the 17th century.

They still exist today, the old trade routes.

We cycle on one of them, from Lüneburg to the center of the Hanseatic League to Lübeck. We move along the legendary "Old Salt Road", where once heavily loaded horse-drawn carts transported the precious cargo - salt - to the Hanseatic center in the north.

Along the route, numerous magnificent buildings and stately estates still bear witness to the former "Golden Age". The old town of Lauenburg, for example, with its many lovingly restored houses, belongs to the largest ensemble of monuments in the whole of SH.

Water is a dominant theme for the small town of Ratzeburg, located on an island in the middle of the lake of the same name and center of the Duchy of Lauenburg. The historical cathedral is worth a special view and is omnipresent.

Our way leads us along the Elbe-Lübeck-Canal, the much used waterway that connects the Baltic Sea and the Elbe. On its banks lies the small town of Mölln. Surrounded by water, forest and idyllic nature. The town with its magnificent, listed old town around the town church St. Nicolai, the late medieval town hall and the historic market place are absolutely worth seeing.

And for those who prefer something a bit foolish, here you go. Till Eulenspiegel spent the autumn of his life here. And even today he is still up to many a hoax, just as he likes it!

Our tour on the "Alte Salzstraße" ends in Lübeck. The Nordic beauty has retained the charm of the original port city and welcomes us openly. Past the historic monuments made of red brick, through the city's landmark - the mighty Holstentor - and through the Old Town, situated on an island in the Trave, we feel Lübeck's joyful, lively and serene heartbeat on our little tour of discovery through the winding alleys of the Old Town. Let us stay here and trace the spirit of the Hanseatic League. But not without also indulging in the physical well-being!

The short bike ride to Travemünde is not worth mentioning. Along the Trave the way leads to the mouth of the river into the Baltic Sea. Here, in the old fishing port, you can enjoy fresh fish in countless fish stalls and listen to the "sailors' yarn" of the fishermen. Romantic...? Perhaps.

Because Travemünde has a second face, as it is one of the most beautiful and modern seaside resorts along the German coast. But it is this contrast that distinguishes the place and makes it worth a visit! Back to Lübeck you can go on the water - our ship is already waiting!

Our joint tour ends in Lübeck. The return journey to Lüneburg to our starting point is by train. If you like to extend your stay a little bit and enjoy your stay. The rest of us set off for home, not without the certainty of coming back to learn more about the history of the once so powerful Hanseatic League!
